Construction Outlook Continues to Improve

January 26th, 2012 → 4:31 pm @

Economic data released today continues to support an expansionary
outlook for the Construction industry in 2012. According to the AGC of America,
Construction spending in November reached a 17 month high, up 1.2% from October
and 0.5% from the previous November. All major segments rose in November
including residential building, non-residential building, and public
construction (year over year public spending was down).

Additionally, the Construction industry added 26,000 jobs between
November and December, that according to the ADP National Employment Report. In
what many of the industry pundits would consider gratification, the Financial
Services industry dropped 1,000 jobs over that same period.

Happy New Year! It’s time we started behaving like a growth
industry again.

Facebook is THE Social Source for Job Hunting

November 17th, 2011 → 2:59 pm @

Did you know that by a margin quickly approaching 2-1, job seekers are crediting Facebook with helping them land their latest gig?

In the article, “Job Seekers Turn to Facebook for Job Hunting” by John Zappe on ere.net we find out that according Jobvite’s Social Job Seeker Survey 2011, LinkedIn is actually in a distant second with 46 percent of job seekers attributing their new position to that business-oriented network. It is important to note as well that because most job seekers use more than one social network the numbers add up to more than 100 percent.

According to Dan Finnigan, Jobvite president and CEO, “Our new national survey shows that socially savvy job seekers have an advantage over their fellow job hunters and it’s paying off. While referrals are still the top source of new jobs, online social networks play an increasingly important role in job hunting today.”

Jobvite reports that more than 22 million workers said they found their job through social networking, which is an increase of 7.6 million since last year’s survey.

Career Fairs Are Going Virtual

November 8th, 2011 → 10:08 am @

The latest development for employers and job seekers alike is the creation of the virtual job fair. The digital nature saves both parties time and money. With the virtual job fair an employer can easily broaden the candidate pool at no extra cost.

Many virtual fairs feature booths organized by company or job field. Some booths offer video or even live one-on-one chats with recruiters and executives. Currently candidates are learning about upcoming virtual fairs through social media, word of mouth, and company web pages.

The fairs last anywhere from several hours to a couple of days. They are primarily used to generate interest among candidates. Employers can easily weed out candidates early on as well as target good candidates to schedule in-person interviews with.

Amy Ng, Senior Vice President of Human Resources at Citigroup finds the events to be especially useful for reaching out to passive job seekers. To read more, check out this article from the Wall Street Journal entitled, “Virtual Fairs Offer Real Jobs” by Emily Glazer.

Do you plan to look into virtual career fairs?

Do you think job seekers will find virtual career fairs to be more favorable than their traditional counterparts?

Social Media Can Cost You The Job

October 6th, 2011 → 3:04 pm @

According to a survey conducted by Forbes, 69% of employers surveyed have rejected a candidate because of what they saw about them on a social networking site.

When asked why they had rejected those candidates 13% said it was because they lied about their qualifications.

95% of employers say they use social media sites to find out more information about job candidates.

Remember all the people who may see your postings besides your friends. Would your grandma or future employer be put off by your profile? These are things to think about and take into consideration.
